What is a screener and how does it work?

A screener is a machine used to separate materials into different size fractions using one or more screening surfaces (screens or meshes). It is commonly used in quarrying, mining, construction, and recycling applications.

It works by feeding material onto a vibrating screen deck. The vibration moves the material across the screen while allowing smaller particles to pass through the openings (apertures). Larger particles that cannot pass through continue to travel along the deck and are discharged separately.

Depending on the setup, screeners may have multiple decks, allowing the material to be separated into several size categories in a single pass.

What materials can screening equipment process?

Screeners are designed to efficiently separate materials by size, improve product quality, and prepare material for further processing.

They are best suited for processing:

  • Sand, gravel, and aggregates
  • Crushed rock and quarry materials
  • Soil, compost, and organic materials
  • Construction and demolition waste
  • Recycled materials such as concrete and asphalt
  • Coal and other minerals

What is the difference between scalping screens and finishing screens?

Scalping screens and finishing screens serve different roles in the material processing workflow.

Scalping screens are heavy-duty machines used to remove large, oversized material before crushing or further processing. They are built to handle high-impact loads and coarse material and help improve efficiency by protecting downstream machinery from damage or overload.

Finishing screens, on the other hand, are used after crushing to produce accurately graded end products. They focus on precision separation, allowing operators to create multiple product sizes that meet specific specifications for construction, aggregate production or sale.
